Build your U.S. financial identity

Credit in America is a record, not a judgment. Anyone can build one — including with an ITIN — by doing a few things consistently. We do not promise to “raise your score 100 points.” We show you what works, and we tell you what to avoid.

The path, in order

  1. 1

    See what exists

Get your free report from AnnualCreditReport.com and check it for mistakes.

  2. 2

    Open one starter account

A secured card or a credit-builder loan. Use it for one small bill each month.

  3. 3

Pay in full, on time, every month

Payment history is the biggest part of your score. Set up autopay.

  4. 4

Keep balances low and be patient

Six to twelve months of history produces a score. Two years produces options.

What to avoid

  • Companies that charge upfront fees to “fix” your credit
  • A new “credit identity” or CPN number — that is fraud
  • Opening many accounts at once
  • Anyone who guarantees a score increase
